Who are the Bonners?:

Our family consists of Brian, Susan and Shorsha The-four-Paw-Drive-Doggie. We started our life together, Susan and I, on Long Island New York. I was Senior Electronic Technician, and Susan was a Medical Assistant at a Doctors office. We met at a Christmas Party in 1984 where, as she made her entrance to the party, I fell head over heels for her. We have been together ever since.

I soon tired of the low pay of my job and being indoors. So here are the jobs since:

Heavy construction Laborer
Bartender
Long Line fisherman
Land Scaper
Brazing marine oil coolers
Ambulance driver
EMT
NYC Paramedic this is where I was injured in an Automobile Accident responding to a call and in 1995 became permenently disabled.

Prior to meeting Susan I had the following Jobs:

Gas jocky
Dish washer, the worst job i ever had
Cab driver
Truck driver
Fabric steamer
Auto Mechanic
Aircraft parts deburrer
Avionics Specialist in the USAF
Electronic engineering aide
Senior electronic technician

In 1995 Susan received her Bachelors in Nursing and we moved to Tallahassee Florida. While in Tallahassee we purchased 5.50 acres in Wakulla County and settled in on the first piece of land we have ever owned.

We quickly got interested in self sufficient living. But understand, I was a city boy who lived in apartments his whole life. I didn't know the first thing about fixing or constructing anything but automobiles. So the learning curve was steep.

We ended up providing for 90% of our needs off the land within 2 years. We had a one acre chemical free garden, goats for milk and cheese, 11 Hens for eggs, rabbits for meat, and we raised one piglet per year. Extra goat's milk went to soak corn for the pig. The whey went to the chickens. We bought commercial feed for the chikens and the goats that we paid for by selling their eggs. A sweet set up.

This is where Sorsha the Dog found us. She was a mangie little puppy, who was obviously abused, and dumped in the woods. So we adopted her. She has turned out to be the best dog I have ever owned.

But alas, the weather in N. Florida made us; and the animals, miserable. So we decided to go out in search for our ideal place to live and homestead again.

In 1998 we packed up our Defender and hit the road! Susan got a nursing job in Denver Colorado, as a travel nurse. We stayed there for 3 months where people showed me what real four-wheeling was all about. We basically lived in the rocky Mountains. I only came down to drop Susan off at work and pick her up again in 3 days later. Colorado was wonderful! But alas, too expensive for us.

We have traveled from Florida, to the Colorado Rockies, to the Great Lakes on the border of Canada, over to West Virginia, up to Vermont across Canada, into the interior of Alaska, back down through the West Coast, across Utah, the Plains and back to North Florida. This was a 2 year trip living out of the back of our Land Rover Defender 90. No small task. We still have a small 5.5 acre homestead in the woods of North Florida, but decided it is growing too fast for us, and is too hot and humid. That is why we started this second trip.

We returned to Florida for 18 months to rest. While there we met Perrone Ford and Chapin & Ann Marie Frazee. We all joined up for local Land Rover four wheeling. They were good people and we are sorry we had to leave them and Florida.

In the Spring of 2001 we decided to head back West, to the Rocky Mountains. There were many reasons, not the least of which was the dry weather; it was better for my health. So we went on a four month expedition through the rocky Mountains from New Mexico To the border of Canada and back to New Mexico again. During this trip we found where we want to live. Montana. May of 2002 we will be heading to Montana where we hope to settle down.

In the mean time, I take every opportunity to go four wheeling. Either alone, to camp and with folks around the country. I have met a lot of nice folks and learned a lot about four wheeling. When we travel from place to place, we primitive camp in the National Forests, by four wheeling to an appropriate spot. This country is an extremely beautiful place to explore, and I invite you all to go out and experience it.

All stories on trips and wheeling can be found in the 4x4 section.
